OWENTON, Ky. (Dec. 21, 2022) – Owen County Emergency Management, along with the Owen County Fiscal Court, will activate sections of the countywide Emergency Operations Plan beginning Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022, which identifies warming centers across the county that residents may utilize should the need arise. Transportation to the centers is also available in dire situations.
These preparations are made ahead of an arctic front forecast to bring a flash freeze and severely cold temperatures, with rain changing to snow Thursday night, to Owen County. Temperatures may remain below freezing through early next week.
Residents may utilize the warming centers if they are experiencing prolonged loss of electricity or other essential utilities (water, gas, etc.)
If you require an emergency shelter, you are encouraged to call Owen County Emergency Management Director Larry Karsner at (502) 514-1769, Owen County Judge/Executive Casey Ellis at (502) 514-8654, or Owen County Public Information Officer Molly Haines at (502) 514-6612, and leave a message with your name, address and return phone number. Once your appropriate warming center has been identified, you will receive a call back with further instructions.
Additionally, all residents are encouraged to plan on a backup heat source and prepare a vehicle kit. Information on both may be found at https://www.fema.gov/blog/5-tips-stay-warm-and-safe-winter.
As always, residents are reminded to dial 911 for emergency medical problems, all fires, life-threatening situations, or to report a crime in progress. Do not dial 911 to obtain road or weather conditions. For statewide updates, visit the Kentucky State Police Facebook, Twitter, or website at kentuckystatepolice.org.
